Diary entry- The beauty of being in the moment

There’s a quiet sort of calmness in a gloomy morning, isn't there? Today was one of those overcast, misty days where everything outside looks a bit gloomy, so I decided to take things slowly. I made myself a warm cup of coffee and took my usual spot by the window, sinking into the soft, light brown cushion of my armchair.

At first, my mind tried to do its usual habit, after a couple of stray thoughts floated in, that brought up little echoes of yesterday, or trying to go with plans for the day ahead. But I’ve learned not to fight them. I just sat back, watched them gently drift past, and sure enough, they dissolved all on their own.

Once the dust settled, it was just me and my mug.

Some mornings I like to ground myself in the senses—feeling the heat radiating through the ceramic, watching the steam curl upwards, or listening to the soft patter of rain outside.

Other days, like today, I just enjoy being. It’s wonderful to simply witness the space between thoughts, that calm, spacious feeling when the thinking mind goes quiet, even if just for a few moments.

A little later, my husband had his coffee. Making it for him exactly the way he loves it is one of my favourite morning rituals. It’s such a simple act, but it fills me with a deep sense of gratitude and generosity before the rest of the world wakes up.

There is so much beauty waiting for us in the present moment, if only we pause long enough to meet it.

If we rush through the morning, it’s so easy to miss the quiet beauty right on our doorstep, like the gentle warmth of the winter sun.

Earlier today, I stepped outside and opened the front door to take in a few of nature’s simplest, free gifts. The soft, pale sun rays hit my face, and as I took a deep breath of the crisp morning air, letting it fill and cleanse my lungs, it felt as though the entire world had just paused for me.

On a cool Monday morning, soaking in those moments isn't just pleasant—it feels genuinely healing. It clears away the morning fog and resets the mind completely. It’s a ritual I make sure never to skip.

By the time I set off for my morning walk, my mind was wonderfully still, almost completely empty of chatter.

When your mind is that quiet, the world opens up in the most extraordinary way. I could hear every delicate note of the birds singing nearby, and the subtle, shifting sounds of the breeze through the trees. But more than that, I was struck by that deep, velvety stillness that belongs strictly to the early morning. It’s not just an absence of noise; it’s a presence all of its own.

It makes you realise that peace isn't something we have to create—it’s already here, waiting for us to slow down and listen. Have you ever felt that early morning hush?

There is a common myth about present moment awareness that I hear all the time: people worry that if they slow down and ground themselves in the "now", life will somehow pass them by. They worry they’ll lose their drive, miss out on opportunities, or fall behind.

For me, it’s always been quite the contrary.

Being in the moment doesn’t pull you away from your life. It "is" your life. When we spend our days constantly dwelling on what happened yesterday or obsessing over what we need to do tomorrow, we aren't really living—we’re just rehearsing. Present moment awareness is actually how I live my life to the absolute fullest.

And the best part? You don’t need to do anything particularly grand, complex, or difficult to tap into it. You don't need to retreat to a mountain top or meditate for hours. It’s simply about bringing a gentle awareness to whatever you are doing as you go about your day—whether that’s sipping your morning tea, listening to the winter birds, or just feeling the ground beneath your feet.

When you start to live this way, you begin to notice all the quiet, overlooked joys that were already sitting right there in front of you. By the time you actually sit down to start your workday, you aren't running on adrenaline or anxiety. You’re starting from a place of deep contentment.

You find yourself anchored in a wonderful stillness—a stillness that asks absolutely nothing of you. It doesn’t judge you, it doesn’t criticise where you are, and it certainly doesn't point out what might be 'missing' from your life. It just lets you be.

Honestly, I’ve found it’s the best place in the world to be.

Some final thouts to conclude today's diary entry:

As I look back on how this morning unfolded—from that quiet cup of coffee by the window to the still, crisp walk under the winter sun—I’m reminded that peace isn't something we have to chase down or manufacture. It’s always right here, waiting beneath the noise of our daily routines.

We spend so much of our lives waiting for the "right time" to relax, or believing that happiness lies somewhere just around the corner, in the next task or the next achievement. But true richness is found in these tiny, unhurried pockets of the morning. It’s in the warmth of a mug in your hands, the sound of the wind, or the simple joy of caring for someone you love.

So as I step into the rest of my day, I carry that quiet stillness with me. I hope you, too, can take a soft breath today, pause for just a moment, and allow yourself to simply be.

Until next time, stay present and take gentle care.

As always I am waiting to read your thoughts. Don't forget to leave them in a comment.

Love you loads
